The Bank of Mozambique has set an annual MZN 3 million equivalent limit on overseas payments made with bank cards issued in Mozambique. The systemwide cap applies per cardholder to individuals and legal entities, whether foreign exchange residents or nonresidents, and covers all cards, payment channels and cash withdrawals. A separate measure amends the prudential foreign exchange position limits for credit institutions, although the published extract does not specify the revised thresholds. Credit institutions must check a customer’s use of the annual limit before issuing or renewing a card and immediately block all of the holder’s cards for overseas transactions once the cap is reached. They must notify cardholders when usage reaches 50%, 75% and 100% of the limit and when cards are blocked. The central bank may approve a different limit in compelling cases following a substantiated request submitted through a credit institution. The new card-payment rules are in force and replace the previous 2025 notice.
