The Central Bank of Malta reported that 1,097 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in 2025, down 29.9% from 2024. Counterfeits remained negligible compared with the 30.22 million genuine euro banknotes circulating in Malta. EUR 20 and EUR 50 notes accounted for 87.5% of seized counterfeits. The EUR 20 remained the most frequently counterfeited denomination in Malta at 50.1% of the total, although its share declined, while the EUR 50 share increased to 37.4%. The bank advised the public to remain alert during cash transactions and continues to offer counterfeit-detection training to local entities.
