The Tanzania Capital Markets and Securities Authority has launched the 2025 Capital Markets Universities and Higher Learning Institutions Challenge, a financial literacy and investor awareness program for undergraduate students in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. The competition is designed to build knowledge of capital markets and commodity exchanges, test students’ ability to apply that knowledge in real-life situations, and broaden participation in the securities market. It will run from May 2 to Aug. 31, 2025, through quiz and essay competitions, alongside institutional recognition for universities and higher learning institutions. The quiz track uses computer-generated multiple-choice questions delivered through mobile and web channels, while the essay competition asks students to discuss the role of thematic capital market products in mobilizing resources for businesses and development projects. Individual prizes in both the quiz and essay categories range from TZS 1.8 million for overall winners to TZS 200,000 for the remaining top 10 finishers, with separate male and female awards. The best male and female students from the top three universities will also receive a fully paid one-week study visit. The top 20 winners from each category will undergo oral interviews before final winners are confirmed, and the top 80 winners must invest at least 33% of their prize money and study-visit stipend in capital markets portfolios. CMSA said earlier editions had drawn 88,871 participants by Feb. 29, 2024, up 82.6% from 48,662 by Feb. 29, 2021, and had helped create more than 10,000 actual investors in shares listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange.
