The National Bank of Romania, working with Romania’s National Institute of Statistics, published the results of its annual statistical survey used to compile foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics for 2024, covering net FDI flows, non-resident income earned from FDI, and the FDI position as of 31 December 2024. The methodology follows the International Monetary Fund’s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6) and the OECD’s Benchmark Definition of Foreign Direct Investment (4th edition). Net FDI flow in 2024 totalled EUR 5,603 million, comprising EUR 4,600 million in equity participation (EUR 1,515 million in equity capital contributions and EUR 3,085 million in reinvested earnings) and EUR 1,002 million in debt instruments (liabilities of EUR 2,040 million minus claims of EUR 1,038 million). The FDI stock reached EUR 125,035 million at end-2024, split between equity including reinvested earnings of EUR 90,833 million (72.6%) and debt instruments of EUR 34,202 million (27.4%). Income from FDI earned by non-residents in 2024 was EUR 10,899 million, including EUR 9,708 million from equity participations and EUR 1,192 million in net interest income. More detailed results and methodological notes are set out in the National Bank of Romania publication “Foreign direct investments in Romania in 2024”, with totals potentially affected by rounding.
