The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has launched a market survey to assess how insurance undertakings across the European Union are adopting generative AI, including current implementations, planned use cases, and the governance frameworks being developed to address the technology’s specific characteristics. The survey seeks information on the extent of generative AI deployment, how adoption differs from traditional AI systems, and what governance and risk management measures firms are putting in place to support responsible use. EIOPA plans to use aggregated responses to provide stakeholders with a clearer view of generative AI’s evolution in the sector and to strengthen supervision based on real-life experience, with the stated aim of maintaining robust consumer protection safeguards as insurers adopt new digital technologies. The survey will be distributed to insurance companies via National Competent Authorities, and any undertaking can also complete it online by 15 June 2025.
