The Central Bank of Costa Rica announced the release of the second CRC 50 coin in its “Fauna of the ecosystems of Costa Rica” collector programme, with sales starting 24 February 2025. In parallel, it will begin the gradual circulation of a regular-issue CRC 50 coin with the same design, intended for use as legal tender. For collectors, the bank will offer 10,000 coins in an acrylic presentation and 7,000 coins in a themed case, priced at CRC 9,000 and CRC 8,500 respectively. The coin design features the “Rana calzonuda” (Agalychnis callidryas) and includes the text “Bosque tropical lluvioso”, with “2023” shown as the year the design was approved by the Central Bank’s Board of Directors; the obverse includes “República de Costa Rica” and “Banco Central de Costa Rica” and incorporates three raised bars to support tactile identification. Sales will be capped at two units per person regardless of presentation. The non-collector circulation version will not include colours and will enter circulation gradually from 24 February 2025 through national financial institutions.
