The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities as of July 31, 2026, showing total assets of ZAR 1.273 trillion, up ZAR 497 million from the end of June. Gold and foreign assets increased by ZAR 3.75 billion to ZAR 1.217 trillion, as higher gold values and Special Drawing Rights holdings more than offset a decline in foreign exchange reserves excluding Special Drawing Rights. On the liabilities side, the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account rose by ZAR 30.63 billion to ZAR 307.54 billion. This was largely offset by declines of ZAR 12.46 billion in other liabilities, ZAR 10.56 billion in bank deposits and ZAR 7.41 billion in foreign loans and deposits from the South African government.
