The Brazilian Superintendence of Private Insurance (SUSEP) announced the publication of National Council of Private Insurance (CNSP) Resolution No. 485/2025, establishing environmental, social and climate-related guidelines applicable to rural insurance. The measure is intended to cover all rural insurance contracts and will enter into force 180 days after publication. The resolution stems from SUSEP’s “Insurance and Ecological Transformation” working group and is aligned with the Federal Government’s Ecological Transformation Plan led by the Ministry of Finance. Initial work focused on proposed adjustments to the Rural Insurance Premium Subsidy Program (PSR), including faster access to the subsidy and indemnification and mechanisms to prevent properties not adhering to ESG rules from accessing rural insurance; subsequent analysis concluded the approach should be implemented through a dedicated rule for all rural insurance. The framework also aligns rural insurance with rural credit regulation, citing National Monetary Council (CMN) Resolutions No. 4.883/2020, No. 5.081/2023 and No. 5.193/2024, including the social, environmental and climate impediments in the Rural Credit Manual.
