Bank Indonesia reported that 72% of shredded banknote waste is now processed through circular economy methods and set a target to process all such waste this way by 2027. The initiative extends Rupiah currency management beyond destruction by converting unfit banknotes into productive uses. The central bank works with micro, small and medium enterprises to turn shredded banknotes into souvenirs and with energy suppliers to use the waste as an additional fuel source for electricity generation and industrial purposes. These measures form part of a broader environmental transformation covering the printing, distribution and destruction of Rupiah currency.
