The Central Bank of Chile published its 2026 Payment Systems Report, showing continued growth in digital payments and outlining planned regulation for immediate payments and stablecoins. The number of digital payments rose 15% from the previous report to an annual average of 435 per person over age 15, while electronic fund transfers also increased 15% but remained limited for merchant payments. Debit cards remain the most widely used payment method, while prepaid cards continue to grow rapidly from a relatively low base. Cash use has declined but remains important in regions, street markets, public transportation and transactions below CLP 10,000, as well as a fallback when other instruments are unavailable. The report also found substantial differences across markets in the use of infrastructures that centrally clear financial instrument transactions, supporting further expansion to strengthen risk management. The central bank will consult on regulation to strengthen the immediate payment system and facilitate electronic fund transfers for merchant payments. It also plans to publish an initial regulatory proposal toward the end of 2026 for stablecoins that can be used as means of payment, following a gradual regulatory approach.
