The Bank of Mauritius published a public notice responding to media reports concerning the Bank of Africa, setting out a timeline of courtesy meetings held with the foreign bank’s representatives and rejecting insinuations that it failed in its duties of independence, impartiality and confidentiality. It stated that a meeting with Bank of Africa representatives was arranged by the then Second Deputy Governor Gérard Sanspeur on 7 April 2025 for 18 April 2025, and that Governor Dr Rama Sithanen held a courtesy meeting with a Regional Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Africa on 17 April 2025. For the 18 April 2025 meeting, the Bank said the First Deputy Governor Rajeev Hasnah attended as Acting Governor because the Governor was out of the country and the then Second Deputy Governor did not attend. The notice adds that such courtesy meetings are common, and that a 29 April 2025 letter from the Bank of Africa to the First Deputy Governor was subsequently unlawfully published.
