The European Central Bank has invited e-commerce and mobile commerce merchants operating in the euro area to participate in a 12-month digital euro pilot expected to begin in the second half of 2027. Following the selection of payment service providers, the pilot will use a beta digital euro in a controlled environment to test technical functionality, operational processes and user experience in realistic remote commerce transactions. Selected merchants will test checkout integration and payment journeys, observe user interactions and provide feedback on merchant needs, integration and customer experience. Participation is voluntary and unpaid, and merchants must enter into an agreement with the ECB and establish or adapt a relationship with an acquiring pilot payment service provider. The beta digital euro will not have legal tender status, and any decision to issue a digital euro will follow adoption of the relevant EU legislation. Applications will be assessed on market reach, operational readiness and suitability, with submissions due by 17:00 CET on Oct. 27, 2026.
