The Egypt Financial Regulatory Authority held an interactive workshop with market participants to present and discuss developments related to activating the market maker activity and the securities lending mechanism for short selling in Egypt’s securities market. Representatives from the Authority and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) delivered detailed presentations on how the market maker framework and “short selling” would be applied and addressed participants’ questions. The session brought together the Egyptian Exchange, Misr for Central Clearing, Depository and Registry, the Egyptian Securities Association, listed companies, and securities brokerage firms. Presentations from the Authority and the Egyptian Exchange covered the latest implementation updates and the level of technical and regulatory readiness, while the EBRD shared international best practices for market making and short selling and the regulatory and technical conditions needed to support their use. The Authority framed the workshop as part of a broader stakeholder consultation plan to support implementation of its issued legislation and regulations, with an aim of improving liquidity, pricing mechanisms, and market efficiency.
