The National Bank of Bulgaria has adopted a new Ordinance No. 18 setting the national framework for quality control of euro banknotes and euro coins in cash circulation and for applying directly applicable European Union rules in this area. The ordinance sets conditions and procedures for reproducing euro banknotes and coins, replacing damaged genuine euro banknotes by the National Bank of Bulgaria, replacing unfit euro coins, retaining and assessing banknotes and coins suspected of being counterfeit or altered, sorting out unfit banknotes and coins, and using sorting and self-service machines. It also covers replacement of damaged genuine euro banknotes by banks, handling suspected counterfeit foreign banknotes and coins, and compliance controls for cash in circulation. The ordinance enters into force on the date the new Law on the National Bank of Bulgaria enters into force.
