The National Bank of Belgium published statistical data to clarify Belgium’s holdings in the United States amid press speculation about European capital being withdrawn from the US. It estimates that Belgian residents hold approximately EUR 108 billion in US-issued listed shares, debt securities and investment fund shares. Of the total, around EUR 9 billion is invested in securities issued by the US government, while almost EUR 100 billion relates to non-governmental US entities. Approximately two-thirds of the holdings correspond to listed shares of non-financial corporations, including Big Tech firms, and the positions are mainly held by Belgian institutional investors such as banks, insurance companies, pension funds and investment funds.
