The Central Bank of Barbados published remarks by Governor Dr. Kevin Greenidge to the Business and Professional Women’s Club Financial Literacy Course, emphasising women’s financial independence and positioning empowerment as confidence, independence, and expanded options for families. The speech set out practical actions including budgeting, building emergency savings, and distinguishing wealth-building debt such as a mortgage from wealth-draining debt such as high-interest credit cards. It also highlighted investment opportunities including the Government’s BOSS Plus bonds, described as offering higher returns than traditional savings accounts, and cautioned against lifestyle inflation and fraudulent schemes while encouraging investment in personal skills, knowledge, and goal-setting. Greenidge pointed to BiMPay, the Bank’s instant payment system scheduled to launch in 2026, which will enable real-time money movement for uses such as small-business payments, school fees, and government transfers, while noting that discipline and budgeting remain necessary to benefit from faster payments.
