The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) released a package of eight recommendations to upgrade the nature data value chain for market participants, including a blueprint for governing, launching, operating and financing a Nature Data Public Facility (NDPF) first proposed in 2023. The proposals focus on improving the quality, accessibility and usability of state-of-nature data and establishing a mechanism to fund upstream data collection and aggregation. The recommendations span nature data principles and accompanying metadata standards, proposed harmonisation of licensing and usage agreements, a nature data measurement protocol for core dependency and impact metrics, and a proposal for a universal company data collection and sharing protocol across value chains. The NDPF design would connect, rather than collect, a foundational set of state-of-nature datasets for use cases including TNFD LEAP-aligned assessments, SBTN-aligned target setting, transition planning, and corporate disclosure and reporting. Data providers meeting the proposed principles could become provision partners while retaining ownership and sovereignty over connected datasets. The blueprint also proposes a fee model that charges large companies and financial institutions, cross-subsidising free access for small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 50 employees and revenues under USD 2 million, with surplus funds beyond 2030 earmarked for investment in priority state-of-nature data initiatives; between March and September 2025, more than 100 datasets from over 40 providers were evaluated and more than 25 companies and financial institutions tested access via an ESRI-supported sandbox. TNFD will work with partners to seek funding to incorporate a proposed new international institution, a Nature Data Trust, intended to oversee the NDPF’s operation, drive adoption of the recommendations and allocate funds generated by the facility.

Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures issues eight recommendations and a blueprint for a Nature Data Public Facility
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) released eight recommendations to enhance the nature data value chain, including a blueprint for a Nature Data Public Facility (NDPF). The proposals aim to improve data quality, accessibility, and usability, and establish funding mechanisms for data collection. A fee model is suggested to subsidize small enterprises, with a Nature Data Trust proposed to oversee NDPF operations and funding.
