The Brazil Securities Commission (CVM) completed an overhaul of its technology infrastructure to receive, store, validate and process alphanumeric National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ) identifiers. Delivered in June 2026, two months ahead of the final deadline, the project prepares the commission for the new identifier format and complements its broader work with the Federal Revenue Service on CNPJ registration integration and data sharing. The 14-month project adapted more than 60 systems and all CVM databases, including validation rules and system integrations that previously accepted only numeric characters. The Federal Revenue Service generated Brazil’s first alphanumeric CNPJ on July 31, 2026, although new registrations may remain numeric until existing combinations are exhausted. Alphanumeric identifiers will be introduced gradually during 2026.
