The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs held a hearing on the nominations of Abby Warren to be Assistant Secretary for Export Administration at the Department of Commerce, Irving Dennis to be chief financial officer at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Brian Johnson to be director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In opening remarks, Chairman Tim Scott framed the nominations around four priorities: protecting taxpayer dollars, strengthening national security, maintaining U.S. technological leadership over China, and preserving access to affordable financial products for families and businesses. Scott described Dennis' prospective HUD role as overseeing billions of dollars and strengthening housing programs, Warren's prospective Commerce role as central to export controls that keep sensitive U.S. technology away from adversaries while supporting the technology sector and small businesses, and Johnson's prospective CFPB role as protecting consumers while keeping the bureau focused on its mission and within the law. He said families and businesses need clear rules, fair treatment and access to affordable financial products, and called for leaders who remain accountable to Congress and follow the law. Scott said he looked forward to hearing from the nominees and working with colleagues to move the nominations forward.
