In a speech at the Hong Kong Institute of Financial Analysts and Professional Commentators’ 25th anniversary event, Dr Kelvin Wong, chairman of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, called on financial analysts and listed companies to strengthen market trust through professional conduct, robust analysis, good governance and transparent disclosure. Wong identified three foundations for analysts’ contribution: research that examines the sustainability of earnings and business strategies, independent judgment supported by evidence, and continuous scrutiny of corporate strategy, performance and disclosures. Listed companies should respond candidly and explain their challenges and risks as well as their strengths. He linked these responsibilities to investor protection and market development, arguing that Hong Kong’s competitiveness depends on market quality rather than only listing numbers, trading volume or fundraising.
