The National Bank of Romania announced that Mugur Tolici will become director of its Issuance, Treasury and Cash Directorate (DETC) with effect from 1 February 2026. He will move from his current role as director of the Human Resources Directorate and will succeed Ion Nițu, who has led DETC since 1999. Tolici joined the central bank in 1994 and has held a range of senior roles, including a period as director of the Monetary Policy Directorate, adviser to deputy governor Cristian Popa (2000–2004), and chief of staff to governor Mugur Isărescu (December 2004 to March 2008). He previously served as deputy director of DETC and was Romania’s representative to the International Monetary Fund in 2018–2019.
