The National Bank of Moldova published its monthly statistics on the Republic of Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market for January 2026, covering banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu (MDL) and excluding transactions carried out by the National Bank. The dataset splits activity between the interbank market (between commercial banks) and the intrabank market (between banks and their clients), and reports spot, swap and forward volumes in EUR-equivalent terms. Spot transactions dominated turnover: interbank spot purchases totalled EUR 15,406.9 thousand and sales EUR 23,521.5 thousand, while intrabank spot purchases reached EUR 356,114.7 thousand and sales EUR 578,400.8 thousand. In the intrabank segment, the largest spot volumes were in EUR (EUR 192,599.3 thousand bought and EUR 333,023.0 thousand sold) and USD (EUR 152,190.8 thousand bought and EUR 202,387.7 thousand sold). Swap activity was limited to interbank EUR swaps of EUR 48.4 thousand on both the buy and sell side, and no forward transactions were recorded. Figures are compiled from banks’ regulatory reports on foreign currency bought and sold against MDL under the framework for setting the official MDL exchange rate; trades are recorded on the transaction date and converted into EUR using monthly average exchange rates. Swap volumes are calculated as a daily weighted average based on swap tenor, and the National Bank publishes the dataset monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting period.
