The New York State Department of Financial Services issued a consumer notice warning Holocaust survivors and their families about unsolicited correspondence from an entity calling itself the Jewish Holocaust Claims Center or JHCC, which urged recipients to submit compensation claims. The department could not verify the entity’s identity, services or legitimacy and advised recipients to independently verify such outreach before providing personal or financial information. The department referred the matter to law enforcement and reported the entity’s website to its hosting provider, after which the site was removed. Survivors and their heirs can seek free assistance from the department’s Holocaust Claims Processing Office, which has helped return more than USD 184 million in assets and recover 356 cultural objects since 1997.
