The National Bank of Georgia hosted a delegation from the Central Bank of Armenia for two days of working meetings focused on payment infrastructure modernisation. Georgian officials shared their experience from upgrading the real-time gross settlement system and the clearing system, a project completed in May, and discussed practical issues involved in implementing modern payment systems. The meetings covered project planning and management, system architecture, the operational and functional model, coordination with participating banks and the Ministry of Finance Treasury Service, testing, and the move into the live environment. The two sides also discussed future payment system development, including the introduction of an instant payments system, round-the-clock operation and the use of ISO 20022. Georgian officials also outlined the main challenges encountered during the project, the approaches used to address them and recommendations relevant to similar large-scale infrastructure programmes.
