The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) reported that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has approved a new symbol for the Saudi riyal, with adoption to be introduced gradually across financial and commercial transactions. SAMA indicated the symbol is designed to support consistent representation of the riyal in local, regional and international contexts and can be used when referring to the currency in all financial and commercial transactions. The design incorporates the name of the national currency “Riyal” and is derived from Arabic calligraphy, and the development project was led by SAMA with contributions from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization. Implementation will be phased, with rollout coordinated across relevant entities.
