The National Bank of Romania (BNR) issued a public warning that a document circulating online under its branding, titled “Increased danger regarding legal security – Power of attorney with total authority”, is a forgery and was not issued, signed, or approved by the central bank. BNR also stressed that it has no legal mandate to issue warnings concerning notarial deeds or powers of attorney. BNR said the document misuses real names and functions within the central bank, including First Deputy Governor Leonardo Badea, as well as the institution’s logo, letterhead, and genuine contact details, without authorisation and with the aim of misleading the public, and it categorically rejected the material’s content. The central bank reiterated that its official communications are published only on its website (bnr.ro) and its official channels (X, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky), urged maximum caution with any document attributed to BNR circulating outside these channels, and warned that creating or distributing false documents in BNR’s name may constitute criminal offences of forgery and use of forged documents under the Penal Code. It asked the public not to act on, sign, or redistribute the false document.
