The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has warned the public and regulated businesses about scammers impersonating the agency and its staff through emails, phone calls and messages. The scams pressure recipients into making urgent payments or disclosing personal information. AUSTRAC does not unexpectedly demand payment from the public or request payment in virtual or cryptocurrencies or through social media apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram. Regulated businesses may receive legitimate invoices for levies and infringement notices, but AUSTRAC will provide written notice and time to raise questions. Recipients should verify any unexpected request for money, information or urgent action through official AUSTRAC channels before responding.
