The Portuguese Insurance Regulator (ASF) provided technical support to the Association of Lusophone Insurance Supervisors (ASEL) for its Insurance and Pension Funds Sector Bulletin covering 2023, produced with the Monetary Authority of Macau as the responsible editor. The bulletin compiles statistical and financial information on insurance, pension funds and insurance mediation across ASEL’s seven member countries and Macau, including five-year trend analysis. The report places the sector results in the context of global growth slowing to 3.3% in 2023 and international trade growth of 0.8%. Across the Portuguese-speaking markets, total insurance premium income reached US$57.3bn in 2023, with non-life premiums up 17.8% year on year and life premiums up 5.3%. Technical provisions increased 8.2% in US dollar terms, with life accounting for 70.0% of the total, while technical results rose 29.1% to US$12.1bn and financial year results to US$9.4bn; pension fund assets under management grew 19.6% and contributions increased 14.6%, and the number of insurance agents rose 7.5%, with collective agents representing 60.8% of the total.
