The National Bank of Moldova published monthly statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, reporting banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu in the interbank and intrabank segments, excluding transactions conducted by the central bank. The release shows that activity in the reporting month was concentrated in SPOT transactions, with only limited SWAP activity and no reported FORWARD turnover. On a SPOT basis in EUR equivalent, thousands, interbank purchases totalled 43,874.0 and sales 18,380.1, largely in EUR at 43,787.1 of purchases and 18,148.7 of sales. Intrabank SPOT purchases were 336,648.53 and sales 646,318.0, led by EUR at 227,361.1 of purchases and 406,430.0 of sales and USD at 98,209.7 of purchases and 214,199.5 of sales, with smaller volumes in other currencies including the Romanian leu, British pound and Swiss franc. SWAP turnover was reported only in the interbank segment in EUR at 100.0 of purchases and 100.0 of sales. The statistics are calculated from banks’ reports submitted under the framework for setting the official Moldovan leu exchange rate, recorded on the transaction date and converted to EUR using monthly average exchange rates; SWAP volumes are calculated as a daily weighted average based on tenor. Publication is monthly, by the last day of the month following the reporting month.
