The European Central Bank has published consolidated banking data for the EU banking system as at end-December 2025. The release shows that total assets of EU-headquartered credit institutions rose 1.6 percent to EUR 33.50 trillion from EUR 32.97 trillion a year earlier, while the aggregate non-performing loans ratio remained unchanged at 1.97 percent. Aggregate return on equity stood at 9.3 percent and the Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 16.42 percent. The dataset is compiled on a group consolidated basis and covers 332 banking groups and 2,292 stand-alone credit institutions and non-EU controlled subsidiaries and branches operating in the EU, representing nearly 100 percent of the sector's balance sheet. It provides annual indicators on areas including profitability, balance sheet structure, liquidity and funding, asset quality and capital adequacy. The ECB noted that most reporters use International Financial Reporting Standards and the European Banking Authority's Implementing Technical Standards on Supervisory Reporting, although some smaller reporters use national accounting standards, and the publication also includes some revisions to past data.
