The Central Bank of Syria confirmed that the old Syrian currency has lost its legal tender status across all denominations following the end of the replacement period on July 30. It may no longer be circulated, used in financial transactions or accepted to settle obligations and payments. The bank began a five-year withdrawal process on July 31 after preliminary estimates showed that more than 95% of the old currency stock had been replaced. Old currency may be redeemed for new Syrian currency through all public and private banks and Syrian Post branches nationwide until August 6, without commissions, fees, taxes or expenses. After that date, redemption will continue for five years exclusively through the Central Bank of Syria in Damascus, with applications and appointments submitted through the bank’s designated website.
