Mexico’s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit has opened a public consultation on a proposed biodiversity objective for Mexico’s Sustainable Taxonomy. The proposal would establish criteria to identify and classify economic activities that contribute to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use and management of biodiversity and its ecosystems. The technical validation phase underway in 2026 envisages expanding coverage to approximately 30 economic activities, following the identification of 21 activities with potential to support biodiversity conservation and restoration during earlier work. This phase also includes refining criteria for substantial contribution, doing no significant harm, and minimum social safeguards, with input from sectoral technical groups and other stakeholders. The proposed objective seeks to direct resources toward activities with positive ecosystem impacts and promote the identification and management of risks and impacts associated with biodiversity loss and degradation. Its development reflects biodiversity’s role in economic development and financial system stability.
