Central Bank of Egypt Governor Hassan Abdalla reported strong growth in Egypt’s Instant Payment Network at the 50th annual meeting of the Council of Arab Central Banks and Monetary Authorities Governors. The network had about 22 million registered customers at the end of the second quarter of 2026, with 1.47 billion transactions totaling about EGP 4.33 trillion. The figures reflect Egypt’s continuing modernization of its payments infrastructure as instant payment systems expand across the Arab region. Abdalla identified three priorities for the next phase of instant payments: broadening access, expanding use cases, and supporting regional integration and cross-border payments. He said implementation should reflect each country’s needs, priorities and stage of payments development. At a separate workshop on macroeconomic resilience amid geopolitical disruption, Abdalla also emphasized central bank independence and credibility, alongside two-way coordination between fiscal and monetary policy as global uncertainty increases.
