The Alberta Securities Commission and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated Market Enforcement Team announced that Calgary resident Douglas John Vermeeren has been charged under the Securities Act (Alberta) following an investigation by the Joint Serious Offences Team. The case includes six alleged offences: four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking given to the ASC’s executive director, one count of fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. The charges relate in part to a 2016 settlement agreement in which Vermeeren undertook to stop trading in securities and not act as a director or officer of any issuer for 10 years. It is alleged that he later traded in securities and acted as a director or officer of two companies in breach of those undertakings. The investigation also alleges that, while on a cruise in 2022, he solicited funds from an individual for a cryptocurrency-related investment in Blockchain Technologies Inc., did not use the invested funds as agreed, and then sought to dissuade that individual from cooperating with the ASC’s investigation. Vermeeren’s first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5, 2026, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary.
