In an article, Payments Canada Chief Delivery Officer Jude Pinto confirmed that Canada’s Real-Time Rail remains scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is undergoing comprehensive testing. The system will enable instant account-to-account exchange, clearing and settlement around the clock using ISO 20022 messaging, with participants onboarded in phases. Payments Canada research indicates that 60 per cent of Canadian businesses are ready to adopt real-time capabilities, while 52 per cent of consumers find real-time payments appealing. The system’s centralized fraud services will complement participants’ internal controls from launch. They include confirmation of payee, a real-time safety score for every transaction, a repository of confirmed fraud risks and indicators, and a reporting and intelligence platform covering systemwide trends and performance. Payments Canada expects instant settlement and data-rich messaging to support faster wage access, property transactions, insurance payouts and supplier payments while reducing delays, reconciliation work and reliance on cheques, bank drafts and wires.
