The Hong Kong Monetary Authority issued a public alert about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens related to The Bank of East Asia, Limited, referencing a bank press release after the incidents were reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded customers that banks do not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing users to bank websites to carry out transactions, and do not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. Anyone who has provided personal information or conducted transactions via the fraudulent sites or screens was advised to contact the bank and report the matter to the Police.
