The National Bank of Moldova published updated statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, covering banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu (MDL) and excluding transactions carried out by the central bank. The dataset splits activity between the interbank market and banks’ transactions with their customers, with volumes shown in EUR equivalents. SPOT turnover in the interbank market totalled EUR 20.8 million of purchases and EUR 20.0 million of sales, largely in EUR (EUR 19.6 million bought and EUR 18.8 million sold) and USD (EUR 1.3 million on both sides). In the intrabank segment, banks bought the equivalent of EUR 468.5 million and sold EUR 745.0 million, mainly in EUR (EUR 256.9 million bought and EUR 420.2 million sold) and USD (EUR 199.4 million bought and EUR 297.6 million sold), with smaller volumes in GBP, CHF, RON and RUB. No SWAP or FORWARD turnover was reported in either segment. Figures are compiled from bank reports submitted under the framework for setting the official MDL exchange rate, recorded on the trade date and converted into EUR using monthly average exchange rates. The central bank publishes the non-cash FX market statistics monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting period, and notes that SWAP volumes, where present, are calculated as a daily weighted average based on maturity.
