The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has provided an update on its 2026 regional leadership engagement programme, which helps the central bank assess how national economic and financial developments affect different regions, industries and communities. Its leaders visited six regional centres outside Wellington and Auckland, meeting more than 50 organizations and about 600 business operators and community members. During the Nelson-Tasman visit, discussions covered local economic and financial conditions and challenges across sectors including aquaculture, retirement services and transport. Reserve Bank Governor Anna Breman acknowledged difficult economic conditions and higher unemployment, while noting increases in employment and labor market participation. The regional programme complements economic and financial data and wider outreach, including quarterly surveys of 500 to 700 businesses and about 1,000 households.
