The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert to the public following a Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited notice about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens that have been reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reiterated that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. It advised anyone who provided personal information or conducted transactions through the fraudulent sites or screens to contact Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited using the details in the bank’s press release and to report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
