The International Monetary Fund has released the summary of discussions, agenda, and background papers for the IMF Government Finance Statistics Advisory Committee (GFSAC) virtual meeting held on 27–29 January 2026, centred on work to update the Government Finance Statistics Manual (GFSM) and related government finance statistics guidance. The published package includes discussion notes and presentations covering methodological topics such as social security schemes, employee benefits for defined benefit schemes, further definition and subclassification of extrabudgetary units, guidance on compiling and analysing state-owned enterprise data, and the use of government finance statistics in fiscal analysis and policymaking, as well as work on natural resources. It also includes updates on the work of the GFSM update task teams, alongside papers on proposals for the structure and scope of the updated manual and “next steps” for the GFSM update.
