The South Korea Financial Services Commission’s Korea Financial Intelligence Unit signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Bank of Tajikistan’s Financial Monitoring Department to exchange financial intelligence for anti-money laundering and counterterrorist financing purposes. The framework is intended to improve detection and analysis of suspicious cross-border fund flows and strengthen joint responses to illicit finance. The information sharing is expected to support investigations and prosecutions involving international organized crime, tax evasion and drug trafficking. The authorities highlighted the risk that criminal groups could shift operations to Central Asia and use virtual assets and other methods to move and conceal proceeds. The agreement complements South Korea’s broader financial crime strategy, which prioritizes stronger analysis of virtual asset activity and international cooperation ahead of its 2028 Financial Action Task Force review. The Korea Financial Intelligence Unit plans to activate bilateral exchanges under the agreement and expand anti-money laundering cooperation across Central Asia and other jurisdictions.
