The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a notice from Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited warning about fraudulent websites that falsely claim to be affiliated with HKICL and offer supposed “Buyer Online Protection” services for Faster Payment System transactions. The websites are designed to obtain personal identification details, ID photos, phone numbers and bank account information, and they also direct users to fraudsters posing as customer service staff. The fake sites advertise services including buyer refunds, reporting of unauthorised online transactions and transaction support for online payments made over FPS. HKICL said the websites have no connection to HKICL or its business, and stressed that it does not directly provide FPS services to individual members of the public or usually contact them proactively. The notice urges the public to treat suspicious calls, websites and other communications with caution and to report suspected fraud to the police.
