HM Treasury has opened the UK's 250th banking hub in Chepstow, preserving access to cash and in-person banking ahead of the announced closure of the town's last bank branch. The hub will serve thousands of residents and more than 100 businesses, supporting cash withdrawals and deposits, cheque deposits and meetings with community bankers. Owned by Cash Access UK, the hub provides daily counter services, rotating representatives from major banks and a free external ATM offering 24-hour cash access. The opening advances the government's commitment to establish at least 350 hubs by the end of this parliament. More than eight million transactions have been processed across banking hubs and deposit services since the start of 2026. The government's independent Review into Access to Banking Services is examining whether changes in access to in-person banking are harming consumers, communities and businesses, with recommendations due in October.
