The Financial Action Task Force of Latin America reported progress on two regional sectoral risk assessments covering money laundering and terrorist financing risks in the insurance sector and terrorist financing risks in the nonprofit organization sector. Authorities, supervisors, risk specialists and private sector representatives reviewed preliminary findings at a regional forum held in Montevideo from Sept. 14 to 16. The insurance assessment examined regional threats and vulnerabilities, higher-risk products and services, typologies, warning signs, emerging risks and potential mitigating measures. The nonprofit assessment focused on the subset of organizations covered by the Financial Action Task Force definition, jurisdictional differences, information gaps and risk scenarios, supporting implementation of Recommendation 8 through risk-based and proportionate measures that protect legitimate nonprofit activities. GAFILAT will incorporate the forum’s input into revised versions of both assessments, including areas identified for further analysis.
