The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), LIMRA and the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute have launched a long-term care insurance (LTCI) industry experience study covering policy experience from 2000 through 2023. The study will examine mortality, persistency, claim incidence and claim termination to support industry-wide benchmarks that can be used in pricing, reserving and regulatory oversight. Thirteen carriers representing about two-thirds of the stand-alone LTCI market have agreed to participate, with researchers seeking to recruit another five to seven companies in the coming months. The work builds on LIMRA and the SOA Research Institute’s data collection and experience study program established in 2021 and sits alongside the NAIC’s broader effort to modernize LTCI oversight, including harmonising rate review practices across jurisdictions.
