The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs’ minority published a statement from Ranking Member Senator Elizabeth Warren after President Trump announced the nomination of former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh to serve as Chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Warren argued the nomination would undermine Federal Reserve independence and urged Republicans not to proceed with the nomination. In her statement, Warren characterised Warsh as having prioritised support for Wall Street after the 2008 crash over unemployed Americans and described the nomination as part of an effort by President Trump to “seize control” of the Fed. She also cited what she called the Trump Administration’s “weaponization” of the Department of Justice through criminal investigations into Fed Governor Lisa Cook and sitting Fed Chair Jerome Powell, and called on Republicans to withhold support until those investigations are dropped.
