The South African Reserve Bank published updated gross external debt statistics for South Africa, reporting an end-period stock of USD 173,051 million as of 31 March 2025. By sector, general government accounted for USD 81,683 million (all long-term), deposit-taking corporations excluding the central bank for USD 33,219 million (USD 29,794 million short-term), direct investment for USD 23,553 million, public corporations for USD 17,571 million, other sectors for USD 16,515 million, and the central bank for USD 510 million. Total gross external debt rose from USD 168,354 million at 31 December 2024 to USD 173,051 million at 31 March 2025.
