The National Bank of Bulgaria announced that, following Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area as its 21st member, the other 20 euro area national central banks will exchange Bulgarian lev banknotes into euros from 1 January 2026 to 2 March 2026. The exchange will be free of charge and carried out at the official, irrevocably fixed conversion rate of EUR 1 = BGN 1.95583. The service will be provided at designated locations at each euro area national central bank under the Eurosystem’s cash changeover rules. A daily limit will apply, with exchange capped at BGN 2,000 per client and per transaction per day, and no fees, commissions, or other costs will be charged.
