The Bank of Italy has published a new website section on the Cash in Shop service and made available a free self-learning course, “Conoscere le banconote”, for merchants that provide this cash withdrawal channel. Cash in Shop is described as the ability to withdraw euro banknotes at retail outlets affiliated with a Payment Service Provider (PSP), using a card or smartphone app, without needing to make a purchase. The course explains banknote characteristics to support the recognition of counterfeit notes and notes that are no longer fit for circulation, and can be used by PSPs that must ensure the service is delivered by trained staff. PSPs can also submit a request to the Bank of Italy for affiliated merchants to participate in an assessment test on their level of banknote knowledge.
