Peru's Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and Private Pension Funds (SBS) issued an alert warning that several entities are operating in the country without SBS authorisation to take money from the public, alongside a growing number of informal mobile lending applications. The SBS said the following are not authorised to raise funds from the public: Capital Infinity Corporation, Finniu S.A.C. (Finniu App), Corporación Algamarca S.A.C. (Corporación Algamarca), and Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Quechuas, Aymaras y Asháninkas Limitada (Juliaca). These entities present themselves as investment managers and promise high returns, which the SBS warned can end in non-payment of promised interest and loss of invested capital. The SBS also flagged 18 informal lending apps, warning they may disburse loans without the customer’s request or authorisation and then use extortionate collection methods, including demanding extensive access to personal data and contacts, applying high fees and interest, and threatening to inform contacts or make defamatory claims. The SBS urged the public to verify where they save, invest or seek financial services, and noted that queries and complaints about unauthorised or unregistered financial service providers can be submitted through SBS reporting channels and its informal finance webpage.
